About Us

AC Surveys was set up in 2009, it aims to help people with their current or future homes. We avoid any commercial works, preferring to be able to help people find their ideal home, or to make the house they are in ‘behave’.

We aim to treat each and every customer with the utmost level of professionalism. We provide a rapid turnaround for a reasonable price. We recognise that our clients are always facing difficulties and are usually unfamiliar with Construction techniques or the property purchase process, and we endeavour to smooth the way for all concerned.

Whilst we make every endeavour to provide comprehensive accurate reports, but sometimes people can be confused by technical issues, or wish to have more detail of areas (and occasional errors slip through, we are human after all) in which case we are only a phone call away and will happily expand, explain (or apologise) to make everything clear and correct for you.

We are a Husband and wife team (married in 1992). We have worked together (officially) since 2012.

Derek Askew

Derek is a Chartered Surveyor, Chartered Builder and registered Valuer. He has worked as an Inspector, Architect and Contractor on large (£135million PFI) and small projects. He has a wide technical knowledge and has been examining buildings in the North East for over 25 years.

He entered training in Local Authority Building Control, at the tender age of 19, and over 13 years gained a very detailed, varied, technical knowledge of all types of buildings. After leaving the LA, he gained greater practical experience working as Lead Quality Auditor for Mowlem, before a brief spell in an architect's practice.

In 2003 Derek entered the world of residential surveying is now delighted to share his knowledge and experience (happily being his own boss, after years of working for others) directly to clients across the North East.

Barbara Askew

Barbara is the Practice Manager for AC Surveys Ltd and as such she has overall responsibility for work allocation, filing, invoicing and reception duties.

Barbara has worked in administration for over twenty five years, having started as an office junior and progressed to work for Vauxhall for over ten years. She then worked for a group of five care homes and became their Office Manager overseeing, sales, purchase ledgers, payroll and working closely with the Directors.

In January 2012 she took the opportunity to work alongside her husband (Derek) in order to help expand AC Surveys. She now deals with the running of the office and is the voice of AC Surveys, usually being the first person you speak to on making contact with us.

Barbara takes great pride in dealing with customers as individuals and hopes to give all our work that personal touch.
